Gamescom 2026 by the numbers: 368,000 visitors, a sold-out hall, and a dev conference that grew 15%
Koelnmesse and game, the German industry association, published the closing figures for Gamescom 2026 on August 30. In a year when GDC shrank by 30%, the Cologne show grew on every axis the organizers report.
368,000 people came through the doors from 131 countries, up 6% on 2025. 1,743 companies exhibited from 66 countries, an 11% increase, and a record 72% of them came from outside Germany. The 233,000 square meters of hall space sold out for the first time in the show's history. On the business side, more than 36,000 trade visitors attended, half of them international, with the strongest growth from Brazil, Canada, the Netherlands, and the United States.
Opening Night Live: fewer people at once, more hours in total
Geoff Keighley's Opening Night Live ran on August 25 with Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Gears of War: E-Day, and The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past as the headline segments. The organizers count 78 million views for the show across all platforms.
gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, the official broadcast from gamescom's channel
Streams Charts' independent read is more interesting than the headline. Peak concurrent viewership was 1.74 million, down 13.3% from 2025. Hours watched rose 27% to 5.8 million. The gap between those two numbers is co-streaming. The count of channels rebroadcasting the show went from 1,150 last year to 7,800 this year, with Twitch taking 62% of hours and YouTube 34.6%. The audience didn't shrink, it fragmented into thousands of rooms with a commentator in each.
The same pattern showed up at the small end. The Awesome Indies showcase pulled 302,000 views, which the organizers report as 670% growth.
gamescom dev: 6,200 developers and two new AI tracks
The developer conference ran August 23 to 25 with 6,200 registered attendees, up 15%, across more than 220 sessions from 390 speakers. Two tracks were new this year, "AI in Gameplay" and "AI in Production," run with the AI and Games Conference. Tencent's Amir Satvat opened the conference with a keynote titled "The Games Industry Reset," and Tencent used the same show to debut its Motus animation pipeline and the rest of its Central Tech tooling.
The gamescom dev awards on August 25 went almost entirely to small teams. MUTTER by DeadlyCrow Games took Visual Excellence, PRAVDA(concept25) by Floating Stone Studio took Most Innovative, Cards & Cannons by Flamehead Games took Most Promising, and INVASIA by Rocat Games took Best Sound Design. The speakers' choice for game design went to Blue Prince from Dogubomb and Raw Fury. On the consumer side, the gamescom award's indie picks were Wanderburg, Finding Polka, and SOKO 1977.
gamescom congress, the policy day, drew more than 1,100 attendees and, for the first time, a sitting German federal president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Next year
Gamescom 2027 is set for August 23 to 29. gamescom dev runs August 23 and 24, Opening Night Live is the evening of August 24, trade and press day is August 25, and the public halls open August 26.
What we take from it
Two things. The first is that the trade show format isn't dying, it's consolidating. GDC lost a third of its audience this spring and Gamescom sold out its floor, which suggests studios are still paying for one big in-person bet a year and picking the one with the public audience attached. The second is that co-streaming is now the distribution layer for every reveal. A 13% drop in peak viewers alongside a 27% rise in hours watched means the show reached more people for longer through channels the organizers don't control. For anyone launching a game, that's the model: give people something to react to and let a few thousand of them do the broadcasting.
