The best AI texture generator for a game depends on which of two jobs you're doing. If you need to texture a model you already have, Meshy is the strongest pick because it paints a full PBR set onto the mesh's existing UVs instead of handing you a flat square. If you need seamless tileable materials for terrain, walls and props, Polycam's material generator produces real base color, normal, roughness and height maps that tile without a visible seam, and the free, open-source Material Maker turns any base color into a full material or builds one procedurally. Everything else in this guide sits somewhere between those two, and a few tools that market themselves as texture generators are image generators with a tiling checkbox.
For each tool I went through the pricing page, the licence terms on the free tier and the published sample output, and I checked what a texture needs to have before a PBR shader in a browser scene will render it correctly. Prices are what the pricing pages said in September 2026. They change often, so treat them as a guide to the tier structure rather than an exact quote.

The two kinds of "texture generator"
Before the tools, one distinction that saves a lot of wasted credits.
A mesh texturer takes a 3D model and a prompt and paints the model. It has to understand the UV layout, hide seams where the UV islands meet, and keep texel density even across a character's face and their boots. Meshy, 3D AI Studio and Tripo do this. The output is a set of textures that only make sense on that one model.
A material generator produces a flat square that tiles in every direction and comes with the maps a PBR shader needs: base color, normal, roughness, and usually height or ambient occlusion. Polycam, Material Maker and the Substance tools do this. The output works on any surface with tiling UVs, which is most of an environment.
Most of the disappointment I see with AI textures comes from asking one kind of tool to do the other job. A material generator can't texture your hero character, and a mesh texturer produces a wall texture that won't tile.
Meshy
Meshy started as a text-to-3D generator and its texturing tool is the part most game developers end up using. Upload a GLB, FBX or OBJ, describe the look, and it paints a full PBR set (base color, normal, roughness, metallic) directly onto the model's existing UVs. It handles UV projection, seam placement and texel density on its own, so there's no unwrapping step first.
The free plan gives you 100 credits a month and licenses the output under CC BY 4.0, which means commercial use is fine but you have to credit Meshy. The Pro plan at $20 a month raises that to 1,000 credits, gives you full ownership of the output and adds API access. Credits reset monthly and don't roll over.
Where it falls down is the second job. Meshy is not built for standalone tileable materials, and asking it for "seamless brick texture" gets you an image, not a material. For characters, props and vehicles it's the tool I'd reach for first.
Polycam
Polycam is better known as a photogrammetry app, and that's exactly why its material generator is good. The model is trained on real scanned surfaces, so the roughness and height maps look like they belong to the base color rather than being guessed from it, and the tiling holds up at a distance where a lot of AI output shows a repeating blotch.
It does two things: text to material and photo to material. The photo path is the one to pay attention to. Take a picture of a wall or a floor on your phone and get back a tiling PBR set. The free plan only previews AI textures, and downloading them needs the Basic plan at $30 a month, which also unlocks the rest of Polycam. It doesn't retexture meshes, and its training skews toward architectural and natural surfaces, so don't expect it to produce a stylised cartoon material.
Material Maker
Material Maker isn't an AI tool at all, and it belongs here anyway because it's the free answer and it's what you finish AI output with. It's a free, open-source, node-based procedural material editor with over 200 nodes, a community library of hundreds of ready-made materials, and exporters for Godot, Unity and Unreal. It runs on desktop and in the browser.
Two uses. First, drop an AI-generated base color in, derive normal, roughness and height from it, fix the tiling and export a proper material. Second, skip the AI and build the material procedurally, which gives you a texture you can change the colour, wear or scale of at any point later. For a stylised game, the second path is often faster than prompting.
A note on ArmorLab, which older roundups list as the free open-source AI texture tool. Its GitHub repository was archived in February 2023 and folded into the ArmorPaint family, where the built binaries are paid, and the armorlab.org domain no longer belongs to the project. Don't follow old links to it.
Scenario and Layer
These are studio tools, and the reason to pay for either is consistency. Both let you train a custom model on your own reference images so every texture it produces matches your art direction, which is the thing a single prompt can never guarantee across a hundred assets.
Scenario's Starter plan is $15 a month for 1,500 credits, Pro is $45 for 5,000 and adds custom model training. The free tier gives you 50 credits a day but is for personal and evaluation use only, so nothing from it can ship. Texture generation is one feature among many, and the normal and roughness maps are secondary to the base color.
Layer has no fixed tiers. You pay for consumption, from $10 a month for 300 creative units, with a commercial licence on every plan and no seat fees, which makes it the cheaper option for a team. Image generations cost between 0.1 and 8 units each depending on the model.
If you're a solo developer, neither of these is where to start. If you have an art bible and forty textures to produce in the same style, they're the only two on the list that solve that problem.
3D AI Studio
3D AI Studio bundles text-to-3D, image-to-3D, a retexturing tool, remeshing and LOD generation into one subscription, and its texture tools are free on every plan including the $0 Basic tier, which comes with 1,000 credits a month. Studio is $20 a month for 3,500 credits. Commercial use is permitted on all plans and you own the output.
It won't beat Meshy on mesh texturing quality or Polycam on tiling materials, but if you're already generating models there and want everything in one place, the free texture tools are a real bonus rather than a trial.
Adobe Substance 3D
Substance is the professional pipeline and the reason "PBR material" means what it means. Sampler turns a photo into an editable material, Designer builds materials procedurally, Painter textures meshes by hand and with smart materials. The AI features (text-to-texture and photo-to-material starting points) sit inside those apps and feed into a manual refinement workflow that nothing else on this list matches.
The Individual plan is $59.99 a month for all the apps, with a 30-day free trial. The Student and Teacher plan is for personal, non-commercial use only. For a shipped indie game the price is hard to justify unless texturing is your job. If it is, there's no substitute.
Where Cinevva fits
Cinevva's Image Generator is an image model, not a material generator. It's good at stylised albedo textures (hand-painted wood, cartoon stone, painterly fabric) and at concept textures you'll paint over. Prompt for "seamless tileable" and you'll get a texture that tiles well most of the time but not every time, so check the edges. Take the result into Material Maker for the normal and roughness maps. Both run on a free account.
If what you want is a game rather than a texture library, the game creator generates and applies materials as part of building the scene. Describe the mood ("a rain-slicked cobblestone alley at night with wet brick walls") and it handles the textures along with the geometry, lighting and gameplay. That's the route for anyone who found this page while trying to make a level look right rather than trying to build a material pipeline.
How to judge an AI texture in 30 seconds
- Tile it 3×3. Any repeating blotch or a visible seam shows up immediately. Every tool above that claims seamless passes this; several image generators don't.
- Look at the normal map on its own. A real normal map is mostly flat lavender with detail where the surface has depth. A normal map derived by a bad filter is noisy everywhere.
- Check roughness against the base color. Wet or polished areas should be dark in roughness, dry or matte areas light. If roughness is a greyscale copy of the base color, it was guessed.
- Check the resolution you'll actually ship. Most tools output 1K or 2K. That's fine for a browser game and often too big, since a 4K PBR set is around 60 MB uncompressed. Compress with the KTX2 Texture Compressor before it goes anywhere near a web build.

Can I use AI-generated textures in a commercial game?
Yes, on every paid tier here and on some free tiers. The two traps are Meshy's free plan, which needs attribution, and Scenario's free plan, which forbids commercial use entirely. Layer and 3D AI Studio grant a commercial licence on every tier including free. Locally generated output from Material Maker is yours outright.
Are AI textures seamless?
Only from tools built for materials. Polycam, Material Maker and Substance produce tiling output. Meshy is a mesh texturer, so seamless isn't its job. General image generators, including ours, tile most of the time when prompted for it and need checking.
Which AI texture generator is free?
Material Maker is free and open source with no limits. 3D AI Studio's texture tools are free on its $0 plan. Meshy gives 100 credits a month with attribution. Cinevva's Image Generator and KTX2 compressor run on a free account.
Do AI texture generators produce normal and roughness maps?
The material generators (Polycam, Material Maker, Substance) and the mesh texturers (Meshy, 3D AI Studio) do. Scenario and Layer produce base color first and the other maps are secondary. If a tool gives you only a colour image, derive the rest in Material Maker.
