What "pixel art" means to a generator
Three things separate a real pixel art tool from an image model with a retro prompt.
Grid. Pixel art is drawn at its display resolution. A 32 pixel sprite has 32 pixels. Image models generate at 512 pixels or more and then, if they're pixel-aware, downscale to a grid; if they aren't, you get a blurry painting of pixels. Retro Diffusion
Retro Diffusion, by the developer Astropulse, is the other dedicated pixel art model and it takes the opposite business model. The Aseprite extension is a one-time purchase, $65 for the full version or $20 for Lite, and generates on your own machine with no credits and no subscription. That makes it the cheapest serious option over any period longer than a few months, and the only one where your prompts and your art never leave your computer.
There's also a web app that runs on credits, from $5 for 250 up to $50 for 3,500, with 50 free credits when you create an account. A credit covers a small sprite and larger images cost more. It handles animation and tilesets, and because it lives inside Aseprite the generate-then-fix loop is as short as it gets.
The trade-off is that the extension needs a reasonable GPU for local generation, and you need Aseprite, which is another $19.99.
Ludo
Ludo is a game ideation platform that happens to include a strong sprite generator. It produces characters in more than thirty styles, including 8-bit and 16-bit pixel art, and animates them, alongside concept art, icons, backgrounds and a market research tool. If you want one subscription for every 2D asset in a game, it's the one.
There's no free tier. Indie is $15 a month billed annually for 3,000 credits a year, Pro is $35 a month annually with unlimited image generation in the web app plus API and MCP access, and Studio is $300 a month for ten seats. Sprite generation on Indie draws from the shared credit pool, so the effective cost per sprite is higher than the headline suggests.
Scenario and Layer
Neither is a pixel art tool. Both are studio platforms whose selling point is training a model on your own reference images so every asset matches your art direction, and if you have a pixel art style already, that's exactly what you feed them.
Scenario's Starter plan is $15 a month for 1,500 credits and Pro is $45 for 5,000 with custom model training. The free tier gives 50 credits a day for personal and evaluation use only, so nothing from it can go in a released game. Layer has no tiers, just consumption from $10 a month for 300 creative units, with a commercial licence for everyone and no seat fees.
For a solo developer these are overkill. For a team with an art bible and a few hundred sprites to produce, they're the two that solve the consistency problem rather than promising to.
Sprixen and Sprite-AI
These are the budget tools, and they're better than that sounds.
Sprixen is $10 a month with six free credits on signup, and its one distinctive feature is Style Lock, which pins palette, resolution, proportions and art direction across every sprite in a project. It produces small animated sprites on a real grid and is the cheapest route to consistency without training a model.
Sprite-AI starts free with 15 generations, then $8 a month for Creator, $24 for Studio and $50 for Production. It's pixel art only, on a grid, with a built-in editor. It doesn't animate and it doesn't enforce style across sprites, so it's a fast way to get static props, items and icons rather than characters.
Leonardo
Leonardo is a general image generator with game-tuned models, including a pixel art preset, and it's on this list because a lot of people already have it. The free tier is 150 tokens a day and its outputs are non-commercial. Paid plans start at $12 a month (Apprentice, 8,500 tokens), then $30 and $60, all with commercial rights.
Treat its pixel output as concept art. It doesn't sit on a grid, so every sprite needs a downscale, a palette reduction and outline cleanup before it's usable. For backgrounds and key art in a pixel-adjacent style it's fine.
Aseprite and the free editors
Whatever generates the sprite, something has to finish it. Aseprite is the standard, $19.99 on Steam or itch.io, and you can compile it from source for free for personal use (the built binary can't be redistributed). How to judge an AI sprite in 30 seconds
- Zoom to 800%. Every pixel should be a whole pixel. Half-tones, anti-aliased edges and blurry gradients mean it wasn't generated on a grid.
- Count the colours. Open it in Aseprite and look at the palette. Under 32 is editable. Over 200 is a painting.
- Check the outline. Consistent one-pixel outlines (or a consistent absence of them) across a set of sprites is the hardest thing for a generator to hold. Compare two sprites side by side.
- Look at frame two. In an animation, the second frame is where a tool that's really generating variations rather than animating gives itself away: the proportions shift, a colour changes, a detail vanishes.
