NVIDIA unveiled DLSS 5 at GTC 2026, calling it a "GPT moment for graphics." The new technology uses generative AI to reconstruct lighting and materials in real-time, going far beyond the frame generation and upscaling of previous DLSS versions. The "yassification" problem
Gamers quickly noticed that DLSS 5 was altering character faces. In demo footage of Resident Evil Requiem, the character Grace Ashcroft appeared noticeably different with DLSS 5 enabled. Her face looked smoother, more polished, and less natural. Critics described it as "plastic, airbrushed, and weirdly over-enhanced." Similar issues appeared in Hogwarts Legacy demos, where an older woman's face became uncanny and artificially smooth.
The term "yassifying" took off on social media, comparing DLSS 5's face smoothing to heavily filtered Instagram selfies. YouTube comments on NVIDIA's reveal were described as "almost 100% negative." Memes showing before-and-after comparisons spread rapidly.
The core complaint wasn't about performance. Previous DLSS versions were praised specifically because they were invisible. They made games run faster without visibly changing how they looked. DLSS 5 visibly changes artistic intent, and that's where the backlash concentrated.
Hallucinations in generated frames
Testing revealed that DLSS 5's generative approach could produce hallucinated details in frames. Because the system uses AI inference to reconstruct elements rather than simply upscaling existing pixels, it sometimes generates details that don't exist in the source material. This is the same fundamental limitation that affects all generative AI models, now showing up in real-time game rendering.
NVIDIA's shifting explanation
NVIDIA initially presented DLSS 5 as having "3D scene understanding," implying the AI model understood the geometry and materials of the scene. An NVIDIA engineer later clarified that DLSS 5 actually operates on 2D frame data combined with motion vectors. It doesn't have access to the full 3D scene graph. The correction was subtle but significant. It means DLSS 5 is making educated guesses about lighting and materials from flat images, not working with actual 3D information.

Studio reactions
Larian Studios, the developer behind Baldur's Gate 3, reportedly pulled back from some generative rendering tools for their next project after fan backlash. When the studio behind one of the most acclaimed recent RPGs steps away from a technology, it sends a signal to the rest of the industry.
Jensen Huang pushed back on critics, saying they were "completely wrong" and that DLSS 5 preserves artistic control because developers can fine-tune the results. But the demos shown at GDC didn't support that claim. The visible face alterations in multiple games suggested the technology overrides artistic decisions by default.
Why it matters
DLSS 5 became GDC 2026's biggest flashpoint because it forced a question the industry hadn't fully confronted: where is the line between AI as a performance tool and AI as an aesthetic decision-maker? DLSS 1 through 4 stayed firmly on the performance side. DLSS 5 crossed into making visible creative choices about how characters and scenes should look. For many players and developers, that's a fundamentally different product.
